The Lalibela Project is pleased to announce the exhibit of the photos taken by the children of the Love & Hope 2000 Center. Special thanks to all the supportive people who made this project possible with the donation of cameras and laptops, to Lemmons Contemporary Gallery in Tribeca, New York for the wonderful space, to Infinite Image NYC for the printing of the pictures and to Jason Florio, a photographer, world traveler, and just a really cool guy for the countless hours of editing the images. January, 2008
The Lalibela Project was featured on New York City's public radio station called Initiative Radio (IR). IR is a weekly, one hour radio program reaching an audience of 2,500,000 that is produced and hosted by Angela McKenzie. It was our honor to join Angela’s prominent guest list that includes Arun Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, and Muhammad Ali’s daughter Rasheda Ali. Listen to the full program.

September, 2007
Tom and Yvette traveled to Ethiopia to spend the Millennium celebration with the children at the Love & Hope 2000 Center. The center has been successfully operating for one year supporting 15 kids. We also conducted a photo project so the children, using donated digital cameras, can introduce their village. An exhibition of the photos is planned for the Spring of 2008. Read the full story...

The Lalibela Project is pleased to announce that Esther Sellassie Antohin has agreed to join the Board of Directors of the Lalibela Project International. Esther is the great granddaughter of Emperor Haile-Sellassie I., the last emperor of Ethiopia.

The Lalibela Project together with Take Higher Ground and Team Techies hosted a fundraiser event to to kick-off their joint project called LEAP (Lalibela Empowerment Alliance Project).

February, 2007
We are excited to announce that Latham&Watkins, LLP, the prominent international law firm, has agreed to handle the Project’s application for the 501(c) tax exempt status on a pro bono basis.

The Lalibela Project and its Ethiopian partner organization the Love & Hope 2000 Development Association has entered into a preliminary agreement with the Administration of the Village of Lalibela for the purchase of a land. The property will be developed to house our brand new children center for 50 of the regions orphan and vulnerable children.

January, 2007
The Lalibela Project has formed a strategic alliance with Take Higher Ground (www.takehigherground.com) and  Team Techies (www.teamtechies.com) to create a comprehensive education and personal development program for disadvantaged children in Ethiopia. The three organizations set out plans to build a new center in 2007, equipped with computer technology to further the possibilities for these children.

November, 2006
Partnering with the Flatbush (Brooklyn) YMCA: The announcement of the seven-month cultural and educational program.

  • The purpose of the program is to broaden the horizons of children in Brooklyn and create a support system from children in Ethiopia.
  • Scheduled fundraising drives and personalized giving campaigns to encourage hands-on opportunity to make a difference.
  • Setting up a direct pen pal link between the children in the Center in Ethiopia and the YMCA after school program.
  • Working on a global exchange project with the International YMCA’s “Global Teens” program.

August, 2006
Opening of the Love and Hope 2000 Children Center in Lalibela

June, 2006
Embracing the Arts to Build a New Children Center in Ethiopia

  • Art show and fundraising event to create awareness to the project’s objectives. We raised $6,100 at the Lalibela Project’s Art Show event. Over 82% (11% expenses and 7% cash reserve) of the contributions were spent on setting up the Center, buying mattresses, blankets, sheets, and other supplies. The project commissioned a local craftsman to build 8 bunk beds for the children. Portion of the funds were also used to purchase a 4x4 vehicle for transportation of supplies.
